Steamboat Trace Trail Closing July 5 for Repairs
A section of the Steamboat Trace trail in Nemaha Natural Resources District will be closed beginning Tuesday, July 5, to allow for resurfacing and repairs to an approximately two-mile section. The area affected lies between the Honey Creek and Weldon Creek bridges, which are also between mile markers 19 and 22. This section between Peru and Brownville has experienced recurring damage from floodwaters and erosion. Kreifels Conservation & Excavating from Nebraska City received the $346,000 contract to provide drainage improvements, installation of 18 new culverts, and concrete paving of 3,100 feet within this portion. Work is estimated to take about two months, so expect the closure to last until the first part of September.
Signs have been posted at the main trail access points, and updates will be made available on the NRD’s website: www.nemahanrd.org. Everyone’s cooperation during this closure will be appreciated. For more information, contact the NRD in Tecumseh at (402) 335-3325.
