Conservation Seedlings for Sale through April 1st
(GRAND ISLAND, NE) – Does your windbreak have trees that need to be replaced or are you considering implementing a new snow fence? The Central Platte NRD is selling conservation seedlings until April 1, 2016 for spring planting. There are varieties of conifers, shrubs and deciduous seedlings available; with 40 species to select from that grow well in central Nebraska.
Conservation seedlings are ideal for landowners to plant as windbreaks, wildlife areas, riparian buffer strips, or for other conservation practices. The seedlings are grown at Halsey State Forest and are generally one to two years old when landowners receive them.
Windbreaks provide protection against the wind for livestock, crops and topsoil. When planted near homes, they may provide up to 40 percent reduction in energy costs.
Seedlings are sold in bundles of 25 for $17.50. A tree planting service is available for orders of 200 trees or more. The NRD charges an additional $.40 cents per seedling for the planting service. To have a planting plan designed for you, contact your local USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
To place an order, contact Kelly Cole at (308) 385-6282 or visit the Central Platte NRD. Order forms are available at: www.cpnrd.org.
