Lower Big Blue NRD Cancels Annual Fishing Derby Due to Low Water Levels
BEATRICE, Nebraska -- Due to low water levels, the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District (NRD) will postpone the annual 2025 Youth Fishing & Casting Derby. In the event's 23-year history, the only other cancellation has been for the COVID-19 pandemic.
The continuing drought and critically low water level at Willard Meyer Recreation Area, makes bank fishing for children nearly impossible. If water levels return to more normal levels, the Lower Big Blue NRD plans to host the derby in May 2026.
The districts thanks all past sponsors and participants for helping to make it a success.
The Lower Big Blue NRD manages 10 recreation areas across the District and has a brochure available that highlights NRD recreation locations. The brochure contains detailed information on each area, including charts indicating availability of fishing, hunting, boating, camping, picnic shelters, and much more. Stop by the Lower Big Blue NRD (805 Dorsey St., Beatrice, Nebraska) for a FREE brochure.
