Lower Platte South NRD Welcomes New Directors Jan. 15, 2025

01/17/2025

LINCOLN, Nebraska — At the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (LPSNRD) Board of Directors meeting Jan. 15, 2025, three new directors were introduced: Chuck Hassebrook, Stephanie Matejka, and Suzanna Mealer. Additionally, new officers were voted on, with the results as follows: Chair, Bob Andersen; Vice-Chair, Tom Green; Treasurer, Lisa Lewis; Secretary, Christine Lamberty; NARD Representative, John Yoakum; and NARD Alternate, Gary Hellerich.

During the meeting, the board approved the 2025 LPSNRD Average Costs (Docket) for Surface Water Quality BMP Cost-Share Programs.

LPSNRD offers a variety of cost-share programs to assist landowners and communities in implementing conservation practices that protect and preserve natural resources. One of these programs, the Land Treatment Program, helps landowners with planning, design, and costs associated with installing soil and water conservation practices on their property. Eligible projects include terrace systems, grassed waterways, diversions, and water and sediment control basins built on cropland and certified by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). These measures play a crucial role in reducing soil erosion and improving surface water quality.

Another initiative, the Cover Crop Program, promotes the establishment of cover crops to control erosion and enhance soil productivity. These crops also help capture, recycle, and redistribute nutrients, positively impacting both ground and surface water resources. Producers interested in participating in the program must submit their applications before the designated deadline to receive funding assistance.

LPSNRD also supports tree planting efforts through various programs, including the Conservation Forestry Program, Community Forestry Program, and Landscape Tree Program. These initiatives provide cost-sharing opportunities for landowners and communities to enhance green spaces and promote environmental benefits through increased tree coverage.

Another valuable initiative is the Rain-Ready Landscapes Program, which offers 50% cost-share assistance for approved landscaping projects, such as rain gardens and bioswales. The program provides a maximum NRD cost-share of $2,000 per project, helping property owners implement green infrastructure solutions that filter pollutants from rainwater, reduce soil erosion, and maintain clean local waterways.
