Mile Markers Added to Lower Platte South NRD's MoPac Trail

Mile Markers Added to Lower Platte South NRD's MoPac Trail

01/06/2025

LINCOLN, Nebraska -- The Great Plains Trails Network (GPTN) advocates for and supports a diverse range of trails across Lancaster County, supporting activities such as cycling, walking, jogging, and horseback riding. Dedicated to ongoing progress, GPTN works to strengthen connections between existing trails, partners with organizations to improve safety and increase trail usage, and plans for future trail links to Omaha and the American Discovery Trail.

This past fall, the MoPac Alliance completed a mile marker project after years of planning and discussion. With funding from two grants—$10,000 from Rails to Trails Conservancy and $10,000 from Eastern Nebraska Trails Network—GPTN installed mile markers every half mile, both within and outside Lincoln city limits. These reflective, low-profile markers begin at mile 0 at the MoPac Trailhead on 84th Street and extend to the Wabash Trail near mile 21.5. Once the MoPac gap is completed, additional markers will be added all the way to the Lied Bridge.

The project was a collaborative effort involving several partners, including the City of Lincoln, Lower Platte South NRD, Rails to Trails Conservancy, and the MoPac Alliance, which consists of Bike Walk Nebraska, Nebraska Trails Foundation, Great Plains Trails Network, and many dedicated volunteers. Trail users will notice distinct marker logos indicating different sections of the trail, including the MoPac Trail (City of Lincoln) and MoPac East Trail (LPSNRD).
