Lower Platte South NRD Board Approves MoPac East Connector Trail, Water Quality Project
LINCOLN, Nebraska — The Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (LPSNRD) Board of Directors held its monthly meeting on Nov. 20, 2024, making significant advancements in community projects and organizational policies.
The Board approved the recommended route for the MoPac East Connector Trail, marking a major milestone in the project. This decision follows the approval by the Cass County Board of Commissioners earlier this month on Nov. 5, concluding a year-long study evaluating potential routes.
The chosen route, Alignment D (334th Street), was selected for its efficient use of existing public right-of-way and enhanced safety features. By decreasing crossings and reducing driveway interactions, the route also minimizes its impact on residents.
This pivotal decision allows the project to progress to its next phase: design and engineering. LPSNRD plans to hire an engineering consultant by early 2025, with trail construction slated to begin in 2026. The anticipated completion and opening of the trail are set for 2028. Once completed, the new connector will link the existing MoPac East Trail near Elmwood/Wabash to the Lied Platte River Bridge, providing a significant recreational and transportation asset to the region.
In other business, the Board approved the Water Resources Subcommittee’s recommendation to accept the low bid of $428,153.85 from Tim Sisco Construction for the construction of the Piening Water Quality Basin located in western Lancaster County. This project is an essential component of the district’s commitment to improving water quality and managing runoff.
The Board also approved a motion to shift its meeting schedule for the next four months, from December 2024 through March 2025, to 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, allowing for greater accessibility and public engagement.
