Central Platte NRD to Give Free Native Prairie Seed on Oct. 20, 2023
GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska - Planting tall grass prairies and wildflowers is vital for Nebraska’s wildlife. The Central Platte Natural Resources District (CPNRD) will hand out native prairie seed to the public on Friday, October 20th to increase grassland awareness and improve wildlife habitat in Nebraska.
Those interested in receiving seed may select a bag of Tall Grass Prairie or Butterfly/Pollinator mix. The bag of seed covers a 20-foot x 20-foot plot.
Native Tallgrass Prairie improves grazing, and provides habitat for deer, pheasants, and other wildlife. It also aids in soil and watershed health. The Butterfly/Pollinator mix will produce plants that provide habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds. This mix attracts pollinators that produce a third of the world's food. Pollinators also improve our ecosystem to help the environment thrive.
CPNRD staff will also be taking orders for trees to plant next spring. The NRD sells 35 species of deciduous, conifers and shrubs. Trees improve soil conservation, provide wildlife habitat and protection for your home. Tree and weed barrier orders placed by December 31, 2023, will receive a ten percent discount.
To receive a free bag of native seed or to order trees, visit the Central Platte NRD on Oct. 20, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 215 Kaufman Avenue in Grand Island, Nebraska. To learn more, visit www.cpnrd.org.
