Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District and City of Omaha to improve Hell Creek Drainage way
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District Board has agreed to cost share with the City of Omaha on the rehabilitation of the Hell Creek Urban Drainageway from Westwood Heights Golf Course southeast to near 120th St. The NRD will pay $900,000 toward the total cost estimated at $3.8 million. The NRD will contribute $300,000 per year for three years.
The City of Omaha is leading the effort with all the planning, design, coordination, contracting, and paying the remainder of the cost. The NRD is providing funding to achieve shared storm water management objectives in the most cost-effective manner.
The major focus of the project is the removal of the deteriorating concrete stream bed liner to provide a more natural stream bed and bank conditions. "The channel's ecological condition will be greatly improved simply by removing the existing cracked and broken concrete liner and replacing the concrete with more natural vegetative cover," said John Winkler, NRD General Manager., This project will also provide significant and sustainable improvement in aquatic habitat quantity, quality, and diversity through design features that enhance the stream environment.
Replacement of four road culverts will provide greater hydraulic capacity than the existing culverts.
"The Natural Resources District and the City of Omaha have successfully rehabilitated other drainageways of this type with vegetative measures," said Winkler. "Rockbrook Creek and Saddle Creek are two examples of successful partnership efforts," he said.
