Forestry Workshop to focus on Seedlings

02/04/2014

LINCOLN (NE) February 4, 2014 - Besides selling seedling trees, the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (NRD) will also teach you how to plant and take care of them. The NRD will hold a free workshop for the public at its office, 3125 Portia Street, Lincoln on Saturday, February 15, starting at 9am. Topics are to include seedling planting, windbreak design/renovation and the latest information on pests and diseases.

Especially interested will be buyers of seedling trees and shrubs the NRD is selling through March 21st, or until trees are sold out. New this year is online ordering and payment for seedlings at lpsnrd.org. About 30 species, suitable for windbreaks and wildlife habitat are available. Through the NRD's Conservation Forestry Program, constituents order a minimum of 25 trees or shrubs, then pick them up just before planting in April or May. The seedlings come mostly from the Bessey Nursery, In Halsey, NE and each species is sold in bundles of 25. Orders from Nebraska's 23 NRDs are combined to get a discounted price.

The NRD also has a new seedling planting policy. The NRD will plant orders of 750 or more seedlings for free. Orders of between 200 and 725 can also be planted by the NRD at a cost to the landowner of $0.70 per plant.

A map to the NRD office is available at lpsnrd.org.
